Richmond Addition

The client for this remodel and addition was a single, working mother of three children who was ready for a total transformation that incorporated her modern and clean-lined tastes into her home’s main living spaces. The kitchen was centrally located but one wall divided the floor plan into two sides of the house. One challenge was the presence of load-bearing columns that had started to settle and cause structural issues.

She also wanted a one-story addition master suite and exercise room to retreat to after a long day. The challenge was placement of this addition due to the proximity to the side yard setback, which constricted the width of the structure.

We kept the kitchen central but without walls on three of its sides, making the spaces airier and bright, and providing direct views between spaces. The new design created a pattern of column wraps and pilasters that visually tied the main level together and also addressed the foundation problems.

By canting the addition slightly, we gained several feet to the master bedroom side of the house. The master suite features a tiled wall dividing the bathroom from the bedroom. The wood wall detail in the bathroom disguises doors leading to the laundry closet, exercise room, and water closet, creating a clean, modern look.

“John and Theresa participated in an extensive remodel of my house in Richmond. They were able to transform a dated 80s house into a sleek, modern space that my family and I love. It was a difficult, extensive project into which they threw their love of modern detail. I would recommend them wholeheartedly.”
